Procedure, effects & risks

What is PRP therapy?

Autologous blood therapy is one of the modern minimally invasive treatment options. It is also known as PRP therapy or, colloquially, as the vampire lift. Using specially prepared blood from your own body, wrinkles perceived as bothersome can be reduced. In addition, the skin’s texture can be visibly improved and rejuvenated.

Because the injected autologous blood concentrate promotes the body’s own regeneration and growth processes, PRP therapy is also suitable for treating thinning hair.

Indications

  • Improving skin quality, skin tightening, wrinkle smoothing (vampire lift)
  • Reducing dark circles under the eyes
  • An alternative to fillers for patients who do not want foreign substances in their body
  • Aftercare following hair transplants
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Faster skin healing after laser or peel treatments
  • Accelerated healing of problematic wounds
  • Stimulating hair growth

Treatment plan

  • 3 treatments at intervals of 4–6 weeks for skin regeneration
  • 5 treatments at intervals of 4–6 weeks for hair treatment

The treatment process

First, a small amount of blood is taken. The blood is then specially processed so that it contains a high concentration of platelets (thrombocytes). A centrifuge separates the various components of the blood: the heavy components, the red blood cells, settle at the bottom. The liquid plasma with its messenger substances and growth factors remains at the top. White immune cells collect in the thin layer in between, with the platelets above them.

This platelet-rich plasma is then injected directly under the skin using a fine cannula. The treatment involves very little discomfort. To make it even more comfortable, the treatment areas are numbed with a local anaesthetic beforehand. Including blood collection and preparation, the therapy takes about 45 to 60 minutes.

Complications

The risks of PRP therapy are very low, as treatment is carried out with your own blood. In rare cases, the injections may cause small bruises, redness and swelling.

Contraindications

  • Any diseases that can be transmitted through blood
  • Medications that impair blood clotting (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen) must be stopped at least 3 days before treatment.
  • Acute cardiovascular problems
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
