Procedure, effects & risks

The treatment

IPL light therapy (Intense Pulsed Light) is a treatment method that has been used in dermatology since 1993: intense pulses of light can, for example, alleviate rosacea, spider veins or pigmentation disorders and improve their appearance. Using special energy pulses, light therapy can also stimulate the metabolism of the connective tissue and thus contribute to noticeable skin tightening.

In IPL therapy, light energy from a xenon light source is delivered directly into the layers of the skin. This immediately warms the skin locally, increases blood flow and triggers numerous biochemical processes that can be controlled and used therapeutically.

Areas of application

With our 3D IPL technology we specifically treat – gently, effectively and with visible results:

  • Vascular lesions (redness/thread veins)
  • Pigmentation spots (age spots and sun damage)
  • Skin laxity (through collagen stimulation)

Skin rejuvenation

Over time, ageing, hormonal changes, sun exposure and congenital factors leave their mark on the health and appearance of our skin.

In IPL skin rejuvenation, the skin's regeneration is stimulated by high-energy light of specific wavelengths. The light pulses specifically warm and stimulate the skin cells in the dermis, leading to increased formation of new collagen and elastin. This improves skin elasticity and thus brings about a lasting improvement in your complexion.

Pigmentation spots

Sun damage and age spots are caused by the natural ageing process, sun exposure or hormonal changes. These brownish spots result from increased melanin deposits triggered by these factors.

IPL technology for treating skin pigmentation targets the melanin in the darker areas. The energy delivered causes the pigmented lesions to be reduced through your body's natural healing process – for clearer, healthier-looking skin.

Vascular lesions

In some people, individual small blood vessels are clearly visible through the skin (telangiectasia); sometimes the redness also covers larger areas of the face (rosacea). The dilated blood vessels are usually the result of an (inherited) weakness of the connective tissue.

Both telangiectasia (spider veins) and rosacea can be removed gently and effectively using laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technology.

The 3D IPL technology treats the vessels and reduces or eliminates their appearance by targeting oxyhaemoglobin, causing the vessel walls to collapse. This allows the vessels to be treated safely and effectively.

Treatment plan

IPL treatments should be carried out as a series of 1–3 treatments (3–6 for skin rejuvenation) at intervals of 3–4 weeks.

The treatment is gentle – usually only a slight sensation of warmth is felt.

Before IPL treatment

  • No UV exposure (sun, solarium) for two weeks beforehand.
  • No self-tanners or tanning sprays for two weeks beforehand.
  • On the day of treatment, do not use creams, make-up, deodorant or any other substances that remain on or in the skin.

After IPL treatment

  • In case of slight redness or a sensation of heat, apply cool packs or a soothing cream.
  • Allow any scabs to fall off on their own.
  • Do not apply serums or creams for 1 day.
  • Always use sun protection with SPF 50.

Contraindications

  • Lichen-type skin rashes, metabolic disorders, epilepsy or other conditions that can be triggered by intense light
  • Conditions triggered by heat (e.g. herpes)
  • Tendency towards pigment changes (hyperpigmentation)
  • Skin diseases, keloids or abnormal wound healing
  • Skin cancer (melanoma)
  • Heart disease
  • Pacemaker, defibrillator or other electromagnetic implants in the body
  • Abnormal bleeding or clotting disorders
  • Anticoagulant medication
  • Use of photosensitising agents (e.g. antibiotics, isotretinoin, Retin-A, St John's wort)
  • Fruit acid peels or chemical peels within the last three months
  • Any kind of dermal filler or botulinum toxin in the treatment area within the last 4–6 weeks
  • Tattoo or permanent make-up in the treatment area
