Causes of tooth discolouration

White teeth are regarded as a symbol of good grooming and health. Yellow, grey or even black discolouration, on the other hand, gives an unkempt impression. Discolouration is usually caused by a wide range of foods and drinks consumed regularly – for example coffee or tea, brightly coloured fruit and vegetables (beetroot, carrots), red wine, curry, saffron, turmeric, soy sauce, juices, lollipops, sweets, snacks and chlorophyll-containing foods. Smoking and chlorhexidine mouthwashes can also cause discolouration, as can iron-containing mouthwashes or the regular use of medication.

Bleaching vs. whitening

In bleaching, the inner protein structures of the tooth are “boiled” with hydrogen peroxide, which makes the tooth white. The result is white teeth – but also damaged ones.

With whitening using a lightening gel, the discolouration is removed with the help of oxygen, which acts only on the surface. What remains is your own natural tooth colour.

Procedure

• ◆Step 3: Apply the photo-activated gel and whiten for 2 × 15 minutes. The gel contains an active bleaching agent that is activated by LED light. It penetrates the surface of the enamel and reacts with the discolouration there. Oxidation takes place in the tooth substance; the oxygen radicals produced cause the embedded pigments to lose their colour.

After the treatment

The gel continues to work for up to an hour. Please do not eat or drink for two hours after the treatment. In addition, avoid smoking and strongly staining foods for 48 hours after the treatment, as otherwise the result may not be optimal or may not last.

Contraindications

Whitening only works on natural teeth. Implants, bridges or crowns remain completely unaffected. Only the natural shade can be restored.

Durability

This depends very much on dental care and consumption habits. As a rule, the whitening lasts 6 months. A touch-up can and should be carried out at any time.
