Procedure, effects & risks
Why the hole remains
When a piercing is made, a skin-lined tube forms along the piercing tract. This tube remains after the jewellery is removed.
Surgical procedure
The entire cylinder of skin is removed with a fine skin punch to avoid subsequent inflammation or scarring.
The oral mucosa
The opening inside the mouth often closes very quickly on its own because the oral mucosa lacks the outer keratinised layer of the skin.
Procedure & healing
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia and magnification. The sutures are usually removed after about one week.
Aftercare
Daily massage with a specialised scar gel supports scar maturation, so the remaining scar is usually less noticeable than the original piercing hole.
